Course Objectives

  • Teach you to use the industry standard GIS software — ArcGIS Pro

  • Understand the essential concepts of GIS: Build the foundation for future self-training

  • Visual Communication: Communicate spatial information effectively using maps

  • Spatial Data Management: Be able to collect, clean, and manage spatial data

  • Apply basic statistical and qualitative knowledge towards spatial-oritented questions.

  • Using ArcGIS Pro for Spatial Analysis: Research Design in GIS. Be able to conceive of and manage a GIS project

Organization of the Class

  • Monday Lectures: What and Why
  • Introduce to new material and important concepts (time flexible)
  • New Lab will be assigned after lecture
  • Live demo for upcoming lab or Q&A for past lab if necessary
  • Wednesday Labs: How
  • Work Session on Lab Assignments, last week’s assignment due by the end of the day!
  • TAs will be available to assist with labs
  • One-on-one meetings to discuss final projects
  • Additional Lab Q&A: Hold by TA at Barclay Jones Lab (Optional)

Grading Policy

<1> Lab Assignments (60%)

  • 11 labs
  • Submit via Canvas
  • Individual work but form study group is highly suggested (late penalty)

<2> Final Project (30%)

  • Individual work
  • Presentation and Report or Essay (5% and 25%)
  • Midterm preliminary project proposal (one page ungraded)
